Market, segments & the competitive field
Who EKLIS serves first, what the benchmark product actually offers, and where the openings are.
Target segments & entry order
| Entry | Segment | Why this order |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Physician office labs (POL) | LABGEN/LABDAQ's core turf; COLA-accredited moderate complexity; low integration burden; self-serve onboarding under 1 day; fastest sales cycle |
| 2nd | Independent clinical labs (2–500 staff) | Need analyzer interfaces + billing; highest per-account revenue; toxicology, wellness, women's health, mobile-phlebotomy-fed labs |
| 3rd | Small / regional reference labs | Need client portal + reference-lab interfacing in both directions |
| P4 | Specialty labs (tox / molecular / pathology) | Rules-heavy, high margin — contested with LigoLab/XIFIN once the core is proven |
| opp. | Veterinary labs | Same engine, lighter regulatory weight — opportunistic |
The benchmark: Comtron LABGEN LIS (now MEDFAR)
LABGEN is a broad, low-cost LIS from Comtron Corp. (Great Neck, NY, founded 1987): four portals (physician, patient, direct-to-consumer, sales-rep), eight specialty modules, "unlimited" bespoke EMR interfaces, and an in-house billing/RCM arm. On August 8, 2024 MEDFAR Clinical Solutions (Montreal; MYLE EMR; $30M Series C) acquired Comtron's assets — Medgen EHR, LABGEN LIS, and the RCM services — as its entry into the US market. LABGEN is now a feature of an EMR company's platform strategy rather than a lab-first roadmap. Its moat is breadth and high-touch onboarding, not architecture: an older-generation client-server core re-marketed as cloud, with a legacy pricing signal of a $5,000 one-time basic license.
| LABGEN capability | What it does | EKLIS response |
|---|---|---|
| Online order entry (OOE) | Paperless orders via physician portal, eligibility at order time, signature capture | parity P2 portal OOE; beyond eligibility + medical-necessity checks inline |
| Accessioning & barcodes | Bar-coded specimen/collection labels, barcode check-in | parity P1 scanner-first accessioning, < 5 s/specimen target |
| Analyzer interfacing | "99% of market instruments" via Labgen Client (HL7/ASTM) | parity P2 ASTM + HL7 driver framework, durable message log; middleware partnership as accelerator |
| Critical results | Panic flags, push notifications to provider phones | parity P2 plus closed-loop documentation (who, when, read-back) for CAP |
| QC module | QC tracking, audit trail, e-signatures | parity P2 Levey-Jennings + Westgard multirules + QC-gated release |
| EMR/EHR integrations | Bespoke bidirectional HL7 feeds ("hundreds of EHRs") | beyond HL7 v2 now; FHIR R4 API + marketplace connectors (Epic Aura, athenahealth) at P4 |
| Reference lab interfaces | Send-outs and inbound reference orders | parity P2–P3 both directions; beyond lab-to-lab network at P4 |
| Portals ×4 | Physician, patient, DTC, sales-rep | parity P2–P3 physician / patient / DTC; sales-rep CRM later |
| Billing + RCM service | Built-in billing; outsourced coding/denials/credentialing (MYLE RCM) | beyond RCM as software: clean-claim engine, denial analytics (LigoLab/XIFIN economics) |
| Specialty modules ×8 | Micro, AP/cytology, tox/pain, PGx, molecular, veterinary… | P4 toxicology → microbiology → molecular first (highest-margin segments) |
| Pricing | Legacy signal: $5,000 one-time basic license | beyond SaaS subscription + per-accession usage — aligned with lab volume |
Competitor field
| Vendor | Position | Lesson for EKLIS |
|---|---|---|
| LABGEN (MEDFAR) | Broad low-cost LIS, now inside an EMR company | Its lab-first identity is diluted — our opening |
| Orchard Harvest / Sequoia | US mid-market leader, hospital/POL | Rules-based configurability is what buyers praise |
| CGM LABDAQ | POL/ambulatory market leader | Dashboards (LAB IQ) sell; MS-SQL single-tenant legacy |
| LigoLab | LIS + RCM single platform | Native RCM on one data model is the winning economics |
| XIFIN | SaaS LIS grown out of lab RCM | Same proof from the other direction |
| LabWare / CLIN1 | Enterprise LIMS · versatile legacy LIS | Complex setup and legacy licensing are the pain we price against |
| Scispot / CrelioHealth / Dendi | Modern cloud/API-first entrants | Speed of implementation is the modern pitch |
| MediaLab (Vastian) | Lab QMS/compliance platform (not an LIS) | Inspection-readiness tooling is monetizable — build it in-product |
Business model
SaaS subscription + per-accession
Base subscription per lab plus usage pricing per accession — revenue scales with the client's volume and undercuts legacy license + maintenance models.
RCM module
Clean-claim engine and denial analytics priced per claim or as a percentage of collections — the LigoLab/XIFIN economics, productized.
Connector marketplace
Productized EHR and lab-to-lab connectors carry marketplace fees once the network exists (P4).
